Sleep Cycles Explained: Light Sleep, Deep Sleep and REM

Sleep isn't one continuous state. Throughout the night, your brain moves through a series of stages in repeating cycles. Understanding them helps explain why you can sleep eight hours and still wake up exhausted — or feel great after a shorter night.

The basic cycle

A full sleep cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes, though it varies. Most adults go through four to six cycles per night. Each cycle includes light sleep, deep sleep and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

Stage 1: Falling asleep

This is the short transition between wakefulness and sleep, usually lasting just a few minutes. Your muscles relax, your breathing slows, and you're easy to wake. That sudden "falling" jerk some people feel happens here.

Stage 2: Light sleep

You spend the largest share of the night in this stage. Your heart rate and body temperature drop, and your brain becomes less responsive to the outside world. Light sleep still matters — it's thought to play a role in memory and learning.

Stage 3: Deep sleep

Deep sleep, also called slow-wave sleep, is the most physically restorative stage. This is when:

  • The body repairs tissues and muscles
  • Growth hormone is released
  • The immune system gets a boost
  • It's hardest to wake up

If someone wakes you during deep sleep, you'll likely feel confused and groggy. Most deep sleep happens in the first half of the night, which is why an early, uninterrupted start matters.

REM sleep: Dreaming

REM sleep is when most vivid dreaming happens. Your brain becomes very active — almost like when you're awake — while most of your muscles are temporarily relaxed so you don't act out your dreams. REM sleep supports emotional processing, creativity and memory.

REM periods get longer as the night goes on, so cutting your sleep short in the morning cuts mainly into REM.

Why interruptions are so costly

Every time you wake up — even briefly, and even if you don't remember it — your cycle can reset. Frequent interruptions keep you bouncing between light stages and prevent you from spending enough time in deep and REM sleep.

Common causes of fragmented sleep include:

  • Snoring or pauses in breathing
  • A partner who snores or moves a lot
  • Acid reflux or heartburn
  • Pain or an uncomfortable sleeping position
  • A room that is too hot, too bright or too noisy
  • Alcohol, which disrupts sleep later in the night

Waking up at the right time

Waking at the end of a cycle, during light sleep, often feels easier than being pulled out of deep sleep. That's one reason a consistent bedtime and wake time helps: your body learns the rhythm and prepares for waking.

The bottom line

A good night isn't just about how long you sleep — it's about moving smoothly through complete cycles. Reducing the things that wake you up, including snoring and discomfort, lets your body get the deep and REM sleep it needs.
